Convinced
Passing the ultimate test of new bows and broadheads
by Kent Thomas - Team Camp Stories
“Man, I ain’t NEVER seen anything like that before….now THAT was a bow shot!”. Coming
from Matt Chote, this is about as high praise on equipment as you can get. Matt is the owner
of Tennessee Extreme Hunting Adventures - a truly unique hog hunting operation our to
Jamestown, TN. Given that Matt guides well over 100 hunters a year on his various properties
for hogs between 100-600lbs, he has seen his share of bows, arrows and broadheads flung at
these extremely aggressive and sometimes impenetrable creatures.
Having just switched broadheads this spring, I was still skeptical about performance going
into this hog hunt. Yes, I had shot my first black bear with the Rocky Mountain Ti 100’s, but he
was not exactly a towering 7ft 300lb boar that would have really tested the new equipment and
put my mind at ease. Headed down to Tennessee, Matt told me there were a couple hogs that
were pushing the 500lb mark and mean, mean, mean. I’ve been lucky enough to shoot some
wild Russian boars in the past and know all too well how tough they are - I have never had a
full pass through on any of them. With a small vital area to shoot at, a heart that is tucked well
behind and below their massive shoulder and all of it protected by a thick armor plate of
evolved grizzle that can be over 1 ½ “ thick, it’s rare that you can push all the way through
these animals – even with today’s equipment.
Standing completely broadside at 17yds, the 486 pound animal looked more like a
hippopotamus than a pig that had just charged us less than 3 minutes ago. Settling in tight
behind her shoulder, I let the Alpine Saber do its job and almost silently sent the arrow through
her heart. Amazingly, that arrow went all the way through this massive creature – a complete
pass through! - and she was dead in less than 4 seconds. I can’t even begin to describe how
those Ti 100’s performed…Not only were all the guides blown away with the performance of
the broadhead, they were equally impressed with the silence and force of my Alpine (so much
so, one of them offered me $1000 for my bow on the spot). Again, having seen countless
hunters every year try to take hogs with archery equipment, the proof of performance
impressed these veterans like no other combination of equipment they’d ever seen.
We’re all picky about our equipment and reluctant to change. While I’ve shot almost every
bow on the market, I’ve used the same size, weight and brand of broadhead since the day I
started bowhunting. Convincing me to switch away from my 125gr “Brand M” to these new
Rocky Mountain Ti 100’s was a battle, but the results from the last two hunts have left me
100% convinced.
